A blast from the past – our Kilroe Red tunnel boring machine arrives on site!

Charlotte, our newest tunnel boring machine, has begun a 0.6km tunnel drive at one of our Major Wastewater Projects in the North West!

The Herrenknecht AG TBM was lowered down a 20m-deep shaft to excavate 605m of 1800m-diameter tunnel.

As a key Network Maintenance Service partner with United Utilities, we are responsible for maintaining some of the largest diameter pipework infrastructure across the North West.

In 2024, following three separate collapses over a bank holiday weekend, Bethell’s emergency callout team mobilised to install 1.4km of over-pumping, which bypassed the damaged sections. Bethell’s in-house design team proposed a permanent repair solution, which includes the construction of a new pump station and the decommissioning of an existing pumping station.

Following this, Bethell successfully sank two shafts 9m and 6m in diameter at opposite sides of the River Irwell, ready for the tunnel drive to commence.

Thank you to our supply chain partner Specialist Plant Associates, who supplied the required TBM and operators.
