Here at Bethell, we strive to be at the forefront of excellence within the construction industry, using a continual investment in new systems and procedures to drive up our service levels.
We are proud to have attained the following nationally recognized awards in our field:
CIHT Yorkshire & The Humber Best Small Highways and Transportation Project Award
The M1 Junction 33 Rotherham MSA scheme was presented with the Best Small Highways and Transportation Project Award at this year’s CIHT Yorkshire & the Humber Awards!
Bethell was appointed by the client to upgrade access and egress to the planned service forecourt, located on Junction 33 of the M1. Working collaboratively with SCP, we enhanced road safety and delivered significant cost efficiencies through value engineering.
CECA North West Young Professional of the Year
Bethell’s own Conor Barton took home the evening’s Young Professional of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the business and commitment to personal development!
Since joining Bethell as a Junior Project Manager in 2022, we have supported Conor’s desired career path by providing the opportunity to pursue a degree apprenticeship while gaining vital on-site project management experience.
CECA North West Project of the Year (£1m-£5m)
The award for Project of the Year (£1m-£5m) was presented to Bethell and Bolton Council for the delivery of Elizabeth Park, the town’s first park in over 100 years!
In collaboration with Bolton Council, Bethell delivered all required enabling works for the park, transforming the site of the former Odeon cinema into a welcoming and vibrant green space. During the construction of Elizabeth Park, Bethell invited local schoolchildren to plant bulbs and learn about the biodiversity that the park will create for wildlife and visitors to enjoy.
CIHT Best Practice Award
Bethell was named the winner of this year’s Best Practice Award, highlighting and celebrating innovation in our sector.
The award recognised our GeoPal digital reporting platform, first introduced in 2021, which standardises our delivery to ensure a consistent high-quality service for our clients. Removing the need for paper documentation, GeoPal provides real-time access to data for operatives, our supply chain and clients, establishing full transparency and assisting intelligent decision-making through data analysis.
CIHT Highly Commended Project of the Year (up to £5m)
Our Merseyway scheme received a Highly Commended award for Project of the Year (up to £5m), where Bethell undertook works to redevelop and modernise the pedestrian shopping centre on behalf of Stockport Council, delivering a modernised retail destination for people to shop, relax and socialise.
During the 18 months on-site, Bethell appointed a Trainee Site Engineer to the project, where he gained valuable hands-on experience as part of his T-Level work experience placement.
CIHT Commended Emerging Professional of the Year
Connah Evans and Jonah Lockwood were each awarded a Commended Emerging Professional of the Year award, celebrating their contributions to Bethell and the wider industry.
Connah worked on several projects, including the University of Central Lancashire Campus, Eastway Retail Hub and various United Utilities schemes, building a wealth of operational knowledge.
Jonah joined Bethell as a Graduate Quality Advisor in August 2023 and has already made his impact at Bethell, proving to be a valuable asset for our HSQE department by supporting the development and rollout of our integrated quality management system and providing assistance to our operational teams to deliver “Right First Time”.
Construction Apprenticeship Medium/Large Employer of the Year
Bethell was honoured to take home the Construction Apprenticeship Medium/Large Employer of the Year award, a testimony to our commitment to growing our own talent and investing in apprenticeships.

CECA North West Lifetime Achievement Award
Bethell’s own Vinny O’Dowd took home the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising his 45 years of dedicated and influential service in the region’s civil engineering industry.
Vinny began his career as a Site Engineer, then moved to the Kilroe Group and, in 1991, joined a newly acquired Bethell. Moving through the ranks, he became Managing Director in 2010 and played a pivotal role in developing Bethell’s reputation as a leading civils provider, implementing transformational employee wellbeing policies and apprenticeship programmes, and providing over 200 employment opportunities to date. Transitioning to a semi-retired role in 2022, Vinny continues to provide key support to Bethell’s estimating function, with an aspiration to fully retire in 2024.
CECA North West Highly Commended Project of the Year (>£5m)
Bethell itself was presented with a Highly Commended Project of the Year (>£5m category) award for its project at INEOS Inovyn, constructing additional wellheads for the extraction of brine and a series of new haul roads to increase capacity and accessibility across the site using over 400m3 of structural concrete and 10,000 tonnes of aggregate.
Due to the complex and challenging nature of the works, a collaborative approach with multiple subcontractor partners was required.
CECA North West Highly Commended Young Professional of the Year
Bethell hit a treble with another Highly Commended award given to Graduate Quantity Surveyor Connah Evans who joined Bethell in 2016 as an apprentice groundworker.
Connah worked on several projects, including the University of Central Lancashire Campus, Eastway Retail Hub and various United Utilities schemes, building a wealth of operational knowledge. Later, he chose to progress his career by obtaining an HNC in Construction and a degree in Quantity Surveying at Salford University, advancing to become a Trainee Quantity Surveyor within Bethell’s Commercial Department.
