Since the era of the Concorde, air travel in the UK has changed massively, with passengers today enjoying a greater variety of quicker and more sustainable journeys. Bethell are going into the archives as we celebrate 40 years of working at Manchester Airport, and our role in transforming passenger journeys by air over the decades.
During our 40-year presence at the airport, Bethell has completed £200m worth of schemes in today’s money, which have ranged from day-to-day maintenance to large-scale capital projects, such as assisting in the delivery of the airport’s £1.3bn Terminal 2 Transformational Programme.
Significant projects completed by Bethell have included the construction of the main drainage network for Runway 2, an Engine Testing Facility, a fire training area, new fire hydrant mains around the entire airfield and the completion of all external works for the original Terminal 3 extension.

Over the past 24 months, we were appointed to deliver new pier extensions at Terminal 2, which are now open and serving passengers! Successful delivery of this complex £20m scheme within a strict timeframe involved the following works:
- Initial project enabling and mobilisation works.
- Provision and erection of circa 2km of temporary airside security fencing with removal upon project completion.
- Construction of 7,500 m2 in-situ reinforced concrete slabs to the new pier structure.
- Construction of 3.500 m2 in-situ reinforced concrete slabs within the existing Terminal 2 building.
- Installation of all drainage, ducting and in-situ reinforced concrete foundations as part of the Terminal 2 existing building refurbishment, including RC piled foundations within the existing taxiway.
- Construction of a new service yard facility with controlled airside access arrangement.
Today, Bethell remains one of the Manchester Airport Group’s (MAG) appointed framework contractors, delivering airside and landside upgrades to enhance operational efficiencies and improve passenger experience. We hope our partnership with the airport continues for the next 40 years!
