A56 Rising Bridge Roundabout, Accrington, Lancashire

The objective of the scheme was to remodel the roundabout providing better access for cyclists and pedestrians as well as installing new traffic signal infrastructure to control the flow of traffic and prevent backlogs to the M65 motorway.

In order to introduce a new lane to the NE approach, significant earthworks were required to NE embankment involving profile benching, installing biaxial geogrid, filter drainage and placing over 1,000m3 of lightweight structural fill. Ancillary works included new footpaths with increased widths, new pedestrian crossings with traffic lights, new highway drainage and lighting columns, and renewal of all pedestrian barriers.

The majority of the works on the highway were completed at night to ensure traffic disruption was kept to a minimum and over 15,000 square metres of asphalt were laid to the newly-configured roundabout including the A56 and A680 approach roads.
