A6 Wellington Road Viaduct

Our role as an Alliance Partner with Stockport MBC involved reviewing designs in joint ECI workshops along with Utility companies to determine the optimum solution and sequencing of works to construct a new reinforced concrete slab across the whole of the bridge deck and the application of a sprayed waterproof membrane to the new slab to protect the structure below.

Due to the ad-hoc nature of service installation over the past century, extensive diversions for gas, electric, water and telecommunications services were needed to re-locate the utilities into more ‘logical’ positions. Our agreed sequencing involved temporarily diverting several of these services to allow for better sequencing of the works and then reinstating them in new positions once strengthening of the bridge had taken place.

Closing the A6 would be crippling to the local economy and, through careful planning and collaboration with the Utility companies, we were able to produce a robust programme for a 12-week full road closure incorporating 12-hour 6 day working.

Other works carried out under the scheme included hydro-demolition of failed concrete elements and new insitu reinforce concrete works, refurbishment of the famous “Lowry” west steps, repair works to masonry, upgrading of signal-controlled junctions and structural replacement of the parapet structure above Daw Bank, one of the many town roads which cross below the Viaduct.
