Lakeside Water Park, Sale Flood Relief Culvert Enlargement

Bethell were responsible for the new culvert design as part of ‘Early Contractor Involvement’ with Trafford MBC in providing a solution to replace an existing, failing structure.

The existing structure comprising of twin 900mm diameter pipes acted as a conduit for storm overflows from the River Mersey into the lake at Sale Water Park.

Works required cofferdams and overpumping of the watercourse to facilitate new concrete foundations, 2.0m x 2.4m pre-cast culvert installation and construction of gabion wing walls.

Once the new structure within the cofferdam was complete, the culvert units were backfilled and the road reconstructed. The upstream and downstream elevations of the new structure were completed with reclaimed masonry parapets to act as vehicle containment.

All the works were carried out in an ecologically sensitive area and also involved the safe management of pedestrians and other visitors to the Water Park.
