Royal Oldham Hospital, Westwood Car Park
A design and construct project on a challenging steeply-sloped site to provide car parking space for 560 staff cars.
This car park scheme involved converting a former disused council recreation park sited on a steep slope into a new facility for the Trust’s staff. The contract was awarded to Bethell following a competitive tender procedure and we developed the outline design into a final solution that included surface water drainage, lighting, landscaping and installation of porous macadam surfacing to an area in excess of 14,000 square metres.
UU had limited the outfall capacity to the existing surface water sewers so Bethell’s innovative design included a porous macadam solution to the whole car park with over 700m3 of in-built storm water attenuation. The existing ground was treated with lime stabilisation to reduce the amount of off-site disposal and produce a ‘green’ solution that required a nominal amount of imported quarried stone.
The final scheme involved the car park being constructed on three plateaus each holding approximately 200 vehicles which were accessed by a separate 300m long access road.
The works involved close liaison with the hospital authorities to ensure that the constr uction works and associated deliveries did not compromise the safe running of the hospital.
The project was completed in July 2015.
