Celebrating 200 years of our nation’s railway heritage!

Have you ever wondered what happens to our railways when it is no longer in use?

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the UK’s rail network, we’re putting the spotlight on how we’re helping to preserve Britain’s former railway assets.

Collectively known as the Historical Railways Estate (HRE), they are a collection of over 3,100 structures and assets which are important reminders of our industrial past, with some structures dating back as far as the 19th century!

Richard Marshall, Historical Railways Estate Director at National Highways commented on partnership, saying: “The Historical Railways Estate forms an important part of our industrial heritage. We work closely with our expert delivery partners such as Bethell to preserve the estate for generations to come. Their expertise and knowledge help us to keep these structures safe for the public to use and enjoy.”
