How shaft sinking excavators allow our operators to deliver works safely and efficiently!
Over two years in the making, Bethell Plant acquired 2 new 35-tonne Liebherr shaft sinking excavators to be deployed on future Shaft Sinking and Tunnelling projects!
These specialist machines can be used in all types of deep excavation works and are capable of excavating to depths of up to 22 metres. They feature all the bells and whistles, including a rising cab, animated exclusion zone, Spillard 360-degree & telescopic cameras, InTeEx safety system, hi-vis handrails, separate modes for digging & lifting and a complete RCI system with lift, height & slew restrictions.
Darragh Costello, Operations Manager (Shaft Sinking & Tunnelling) at Bethell Construction, said: “Bethell has invested in two state-of-the-art 35-tonne Liebherr shaft sinking excavators to support our growing Shaft Sinking & Tunnelling Division. This significant investment enhances safety, efficiency, and visibility on site, ensuring our teams are equipped with the best tools to deliver complex, high-quality projects for our clients.”

Here’s how these machines help our operators work safely and efficiently:
A wider grouser pad offers stability and greater ground pressure when working.
Bethell Blue hi-vis chevrons allow greater visibility on site.
A rising cab provides the operator with a greater view over the shaft or deep excavation.
Cameras have also been fitted to the telescopic boom to provide the operator with constant visibility in the cab as well as taking instructions from his banksman.
Ronan Kilroe, Plant Operations Manager at Bethell Plant Services, said: “This is something that has been in discussion with myself and Matt, having worked in conjunction with both Liebherr and our specialist Shaft Sinking & Tunnelling team for nearly 2 years now. To finally see the machines in person is something quite special!”
They represent one of our most significant investments in plant and equipment to date, demonstrating Bethell’s commitment to providing our operational staff with the best equipment to deliver projects safely, efficiently and to a high quality standard for all of our clients.
“The two machines are a modern twist on a Liebherr classic, based on machine specifications from the old Kilroe Construction days and a machine that we recently externally hired in on a Wastewater Project in Bury. There are very few machines of this type within the country, especially as high of a spec, with the rising cabs and additional technical & safety features included. They represent one of our most significant investments in plant and equipment to date, demonstrating Bethell’s commitment to providing our operational staff with the best equipment to deliver projects safely, efficiently and to a high quality standard for all of our clients.”
As a contractor delivering various Major Capital Delivery projects for key utility clients, Bethell is always investigating how tunnelling activities can be carried out safer, more efficiently and sustainably, in line with our Company’s core values.
