There are over 300 careers in the construction industry; however, Jan’s career choice isn’t one you’d immediately associate with the sector.
As a Junior Accounts Assistant, Jan Masalski manages the cashbook, processes invoices, checks bank statements and provides administrative support to Bethell’s plant department. He is a member of our finance department that works behind the scenes on every project to ensure invoices are processed, tax is paid, and cash flow is balanced.
Jan explained how the role has helped him find new skills, saying: “I learned how important teamwork is and how all the other departments collaborate to make projects happen. My role has helped me improve my communication, confidence and time management, and I gained an understanding of how a workforce operates.”

Management Accountant Hannah Ward is Jan’s manager and day-to-day mentor. Speaking of Jan’s first impressions on the team, she said: “Jan impressed the team with his dedication, professionalism, and eagerness to learn. He approached every opportunity with a positive mindset and strong work ethic. Jan showed a genuine interest in understanding the wider business and built strong relationships with colleagues.”

Jan is the latest T Level graduate to join Bethell, with the programme in its fourth year of operation and several graduates taking on full-time roles in the business, including quantity surveyors, site engineers and workshop co-ordinators.
Would Jan recommend the T Level programme? “Yes. T Levels gave me valuable workplace exposure and helped me develop practical skills. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a career in civil engineering as very few other courses can provide this kind of experience.”
Explaining what comes next after the work experience placement, Hannah said: “Jan has an exciting career path ahead of him at Bethell. Now a full-time member of the Finance team, Jan can broaden his experience with a wider range of responsibilities and access ongoing training, mentoring and development opportunities.”
