Trainee Site Engineer Mueen picks up ‘Engineering Apprentice of the Year’ award!

On Thursday 13th February, Trainee Site Engineer Mueen Uddin received the Engineering Apprentice of the Year Award from The University of Salford at their Apprenticeship Awards evening at the Etihad Stadium!

Mueen joined Bethell as a T Level student in 2022 from Bolton College, initially taking on a 9-week work experience placement where he discovered his passion for civil engineering.

After completing his placement, Mueen returned to Bethell as a result of the positive experience and his eagerness to learn more about the sector. During his retained placement, he was mentored by Senior Project Manager Craig Lee and gained valuable first-hand experience at our Merseyway scheme in Stockport.

In September, Mueen began the next stage of his career in construction as an apprentice, studying at Salford University and further expanding his skillset with a particular interest in tunnelling following his experience as part of the Bethell Team at a Capital Delivery scheme in Bury, working on behalf of United Utilities.

Darragh Costello, Operations Manager (Shaft Sinking & Tunnelling) at Bethell Construction, said, “All of us in the Capital Project Delivery team have been impressed by Mueen’s work ethic, as he is always ready to step up to the task. On a regular day, he will be setting out shaft & tunnel alignments, completing quality control, proving to be a valuable asset to the team. As Mueen reaches the next stage in his apprentice journey, we continue to support his development by increasing his responsibility and providing him with the opportunity to take ownership of sections of the project as his own. Mueen has received plenty of positive feedback and praise from The University of Salford and is excelling in his academic studies.

All of us in the Capital Project Delivery team have been impressed by Mueen’s work ethic, as he is always ready to step up to the task.

As a result, Mueen has taken on responsibility to oversee some specific site activities and prove his increasing competence and leadership skills within his role.
