EG Group - Maghull

EG Group, one of the UK’s largest forecourt providers, recently acquired a site in Maghull, Liverpool for the planned development of a new petrol station and forecourt, situated on the M58. In total, the scheme includes a petrol station, two drive-through restaurants and a coffee shop.

Executive Summary- Bethell have been trusted civils partners to EG Group since 2018 and in that time have delivered section 278 works for various new forecourts throughout the United Kingdom. The works at the new Maghull site were no different, with Bethell providing Early Contractor Involvement (ECI); inputting into budget costings, programme and phasing information, dealing with enquiries for potential utility service diversions plus all applications to local highway authorities for road opening notices and traffic.

Scope of works- Bethell’s site team delivered a full road construction package to form a new approach to the development along with new footpaths, cycleways, and traffic systems. A new concrete retaining structure was constructed alongside the northern verge complete with the installation of a pedestrian parapet railing and a 182m Vehicle Restraining System (VRS) safety barrier to the banking adjacent to the junction. We also completed works to install new pedestrian islands and guardrails across the junction with TM in place.

During the completion of the scheme, we faced various challenges particularly with concerns to reducing disruption to the nearby Ashworth Hospital; a high security facility requiring 24/7 access. Our customer liaison team arranged weekly communication with the estate manager at Ashworth Hospital providing regular updates, along with gathering any feedback for further improvement.

Our customer liaison team provided support throughout the schemes 35-week contract, consulting with all stakeholders and providing regular updates on project progress and any operations ahead of programme that could cause disruption. Traffic Management was in place and maintained by our TM partners with daily audits ensuring TM was operational and pedestrian walkways were safe and free from debris.

This project will be the 10th scheme we have completed for EG Group, further cementing our relationship with the client as a trusted delivery partner for their future strategic growth plans. We have now started work on our 11th EG scheme at a new site in Somerset as we span our operations further afield, providing multi-faced civils and utilities solutions across the nation.
