Green Careers Week: Why consider a Green Career?

This week is Green Careers Week, which celebrates the career opportunities that are available in the Green industry! At Bethell, our Green Energy team work across the UK to help businesses achieve their carbon net zero goals, installing EV chargers and delivering greener energy infrastructure.

To learn more about the opportunities available in the green industry for those starting their career journey, we sat down with two Bethell apprentice electricians, Harry Brown and Bradley Bowers, to chat about what a career in Green Energy at Bethell is like and how those new to the industry can get started.

What were your initial career aspirations?

After finishing school, my priority was to look for a stable career with the potential to grow and develop in the electrical industry.

My dad is a gas engineer so, initially, I planned to follow his lead and train to become a gas engineer myself.

What was your initial impression of a Green career?

Before joining Bethell, I didn’t have any idea of what Green Energy was or what a career in the industry would be like.

My first impression was that Green Energy just involved installing EV chargers, but since joining Bethell, I’ve realised that it encompasses much more than that like solar, hydrogen and battery storage!

What are the day-to-day repsonsibilities for an Apprentice Electrician?

My responsibilities are to ensure our sites are kept clean and tidy, organising the provision of tools for the electricians and to provide general assistance for them where needed.

In my day-to-day role, I normally perform tasks to assist the electricians such as stripping cable.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a Green career?

Because what we do in Green Energy is a specialist area, there is the potential for young people to build valuable skills and obtain access to more career development opportunities.

The Green Energy industry is the future, and will generate lots of job opportunities for young people in the years to come.

After completing your apprenticeship, what’s next?

Initially, following the completion of my apprenticeship, I’ll move into an electrician role. Afterwards, I’m interested in progressing to a managerial position such as an electrical manager or operations manager.

My next priority after completing my apprenticeship will be to obtain my gas certifications and expand my current skillset.
