Lead Design Engineer (Waste Water)


Salary and Benefits: Negotiable day rate depending on experience.

Location: Kearsley (M26 1GE) with travel to United Utilities sites as and when required.

What Will The Role Involve?

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Lead Design Engineer to come on board with us on a 6-month basis and take responsibility for designing the delivery of wastewater infrastructure technical solutions for the United Utilities AMP7 framework. You will take responsibility for the specification compliance of projects and will lead multi-discipline external consultancy engineering teams to ensure solutions are delivered to schedule, budget and our United Utilities Asset Standards.

The United Utilities wastewater schemes are likely to adopt civil engineering techniques such as open-cut, shaft construction, timber headings, no-dig techniques (directional drilling/ pipe jacking), sewer re-lining and general sewer rehabilitation. Most of these schemes will also involve temporary works, especially groundwork support.

In this role, you will perform Lead Designer duties and take ownership and responsibility for the technical appropriateness and compliance for project solutions delivered by Bethell. You will manage the development and delivery of appropriate, robust, reliable, operable and maintainable designs that meet United Utilities standards whilst overseeing the production and management of engineering budgets and schedules for review by the Pre-Construction Manager and Estimating Director prior to submission.

You’ll be expected to implement change control processes to track and manage the development of the engineering element of a project to ensure all budgetary, programme and scope changes are correctly authorised. You also ensure that all engineering outputs provided are in accordance with Health and Safety Legislation, documented Business Processes, Quality Management Systems & best practice e.g. checked and verified: calculations, drawings, specifications, and compliance with the clients Asset Standards.

What key skills & experience are we looking for?


·        Minimum 10 years in the civil engineering industry.

·        Familiar with United Utilities Standards, processes and procedures.

·        Ability to interrogate and challenge civils design, including reinforcement detailing for best value

·        Previous experience in a similar role in a medium-sized civil engineering business


·        BSc in Civil Engineering

·        Qualification in Temporary Works evaluation

·        Site experience of wastewater networks and with time spent working within a Contactor’s Design environment.
