Supporting the transition to civilian life at Bethell!

This Saturday is Armed Forces Day, a celebration of the brave men and women who serve our country every day. Equally, it’s also important that we support ex-military veterans in ensuring that they can move towards a successful and fulfilling civilian career.

We recognise the need for talent in our industry and, as a member of the Armed Forces Covenant, Bethell understands the value that ex-forces talent can bring to the workplace, which is reflected in our recruitment and development in the organisation.

We spoke with two of Bethell’s own ex-military team members about their journeys to a career in construction,

Michael Robins, Quality Advisor at Bethell Construction, said: “Following the conclusion of my service in the Royal Air Force after 13 years, I appreciated the work experience opportunities that were provided by the construction industry to assist my transition towards a civilian career, whilst also making the best use of the skills I had developed during my service.”

My experience in the RAF writing procedures, carrying out maintenance checks on equipment and providing training is now being applied to my current role at Bethell, who provide a great work environment for ex-forces members such as myself to thrive.

Mason Howe, Green Energy Planner at Bethell Utility Services, described his experience transitioning from a military career to a career in utilities, explaining: “My civilian career began driving HGVs, later gaining experience in tarmacking and groundworks. During this time, I acquired my CSCS card and later my project management foundation qualification. This allowed me to apply for a trainee project manager position at Bethell, where I had utilised the skills I’d gained during my service in a new working environment in utilities.”

Thanks to my continual study and dedication to my work, I was offered a promotion, taking up a new position as a Planner for Bethell Utility Services’ Green Energy workstream, where we’re helping to energise the UK’s national EV charging network for a net-zero future!
